Snow blowers may seem fairly easy to use, but there’s often quite a learning curve for buyers who have never operated one of these unique machines before. While your owner’s manual should tell you everything you need to know about your machine's controls, for helpful tips on how to use a snow blower effectively and avoid damaging your new equipment, check out our article below.

Set a Path

While you’ll be able to adjust the direction of your snow blower’s discharge shoot as you push, to ensure you don’t end up covering the same areas multiple times, try to have a set path to follow before you start up your engine. This will ensure you know exactly where the excess snow is going to pile up once it’s off your drive, and keep you from having to go back and fix silly mistakes, such as piles of snow out in the street, or in front of important entry points such as doorways and walkways. Once you know what path you're going to follow, make sure to take a moment to walk along and remove any stones or debris that are in your way, as these could potentially damage your machine or your property.

Prep Your Blower

Before you can start removing snow from your driveway and sidewalks, you’ll first need to prep your blower for the upcoming task. Before you begin, make sure your snow blower’s tires have plenty of air, the fuel tank has enough stabilizer, and the auger is set to the correct setting. Finding the correct height at which to set your auger may take some trial and error, as the measurement will vary based on the depth of the snow and whether you’re covering pavement or gravel. Generally speaking, you’ll set your blower closer to the ground when going over pavement, and higher when you’re covering gravel.
